“The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” is the epilogue to “The Laramie Project” play that was based on the notorious 1998 murder in Wyoming of a gay man named Matthew Shepard. There are only 100 theaters across the world bringing the production to the stage, and Oregon State University is one of them.
The new play focuses on how Shepard’s murder still affects Laramie and the world today. It will include new interviews with Matthew’s mother and gay rights activist Judy Shepard and Aaron McKinney, who was convicted of Shepard’s murder.
“The Laramie Project” has faced controversy before in Oregon. A former drama teacher from Southridge High School filed a lawsuit against the Beaverton School District for a wrongful discharge after Southridge High School tried to shut down a performance of the play in 2005.
“The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” opens on Oct. 12 at Withycombe Hall on OSU’s campus.
