Ralph Nader always proves a popular draw in Portland. And today was no different as he told a crowd of 400 people packed into the ballroom at University Place Hotel in downtown Portland this afternoon that “The weaker we think we are, the stronger we see the opposition.”
His discussion about a Single Payer Health Care System resonated strongly with his supporters. “This is the great year of Democratic betrayal,” he said.
Nader cites corporate abuse of power as the main reason the U.S. lacks, and is not discussing, a single-payer health insurance plan. He describes single payer as “full Medicare for all” and asked the crowd why public tax dollars continue to feed the Pentagon budget as thousands each year die in America due to having no health insurance.
The speech also segued to his new novel “Only The Super Rich Can Save Us.” The story is a “practical utopia” in which Nader imagines all of the super-powerful billionaires in the U.S. getting together to take down corporation control on the world we live in. “This is my answer to Ayn Rand,” the 75-year-old Nader said while waving the 700-page book in the air.
After the lecture, he spent time answering questions from audience members and signing copies of his book.

A significant number of hands went up when Mr. Nader asked how many voted for Obama. I’ve gone by Rep. Blumenauer’s office a number of times and was “told” by Willie Smith, Blumenaur will not support single payer. I’ve asked a number of times to meet with Earl, never happened. When I asked for public disclosure, Willie smiled, said they can keep all kinds of things secret, by law. I was polite, I was treated dismissively, the non-verbals were bureaucratically smirky. I was a Democrat who voted for Earl. I joined Oregon’s new Progressive Party last night. I called this morning and put Senator Wyden’s office on notice, too
