U.S. Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.), no stranger to raising awareness in Congress of China’s dismal human-rights record, has introduced a resolution supporting two activists prosecuted for their activities following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Wu’s resolution, which was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs last week, expresses support for activists Huang Qi and Tan Zuoren “for engaging in peaceful expression as they seek answers and justice for the parents whose children were killed in the Sichuan earthquake.”

Human Rights Watch and other rights groups protested last summer when Tan and Huang were put on trial for subversion and possessing state secrets respectively. Their verdicts have not yet been announced, and the two men are still in prison, says Wu spokesman Julia Krahe.

Wu, who was born in Taiwan, has a record for defending human rights and calling out China for its abuses. Ten years ago, Wu’s efforts around China put him at odds with Nike, the largest company in Wu’s district.

  1. chuck yeager says:

Wu is my rep. I am saddend that in times like these he is distracting the needs of our homeland with trivial, unproductive legislation.

He voted for the TARP. This is a single issue for me that I can’t forgive.

He uses taxpayer money to unabashedly promot himself This is another issue I cannot forgive.

Worst of all, he stands for nothing.

I will not only not vote for him…I will volunteer for whoever runs against him.

I am full of dark thoughts and pools of anger over how my representative has failed to do his job.

  2. david Wu did not listen to the activists here at home on health care and voted for it anyways.
