Six months ago when Mayor Sam Adams unveiled his 2009-2010 budget, he talked about the $318,250 he was setting aside in his own office budget to support a new program for teen-agers.
“The program will provide funding for Education Strategy coordination in the Mayor’s Office; Youth Corps College and Career Exploration, Internships and Work Experiences; and Multnomah County Youth Commission support,” documents on the mayor’s proposed budget say.
Turns out $30,000 of that $318,250 went to buying $100 gift certificates from Fred Meyer to give to teen-agers who successfully participated in summer site visits to local businesses and colleges. Different? Maybe. But it’s not against the rules.
Fred Meyer chipped in an additional $5,000 worth of gift certificates, says Adams spokesman Roy Kaufmann. But that donation doesn’t show up on the city’s 2009 lobbying reports because it was a gift to the Portland Schools Foundation, which helped administer the mayor’s program, Kaufmann says.
One last piece of Portland Schools Foundation/City Hall news: Adams didn’t actually attend the Principal for a Day events this year. Adams had been scheduled to spend last Tuesday at the Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women, part of Jefferson High School. However, the mayor was sick and had to cancel.

Thank Goodness.
To the Portland Schools Foundation:
How can any responsible or concerned adult allow someone like Sam Adams, with his inappropriate history involving a young male, visit schools and interact with our youth in any capacity? What kind of example is Adams for our young people? Where are the responsible adults, teachers and leaders in our community? Please comment if anyone else finds this troubling.
Sam had some problems filling this campaign promise to help keep high school students from dropping out. Federal grant money exists to help keep grade school and middle school students from dropping out because some study found that more cost effect than helping high school students.
Anyway Sam was trying to help where the need is greatest, namely his public image. When working with state officials, universities and corporate sponsors he tended to take all the credit himself despite the fact that he had raised less than 10% of the funding.
Taking credit for other peoples work earned Sam a cold shoulder so that is why this campaign promise has fizzled out.
Freddies and Sammy hookin’ up? Who’da thunk. I wonder who approached who. Any way to find out?
Like a certain president, little by little what is happening is going full circle.
Thank God,BHO is smart enough NOT,to take Sam to DC for a “CZAR” job.
“Sam” had some problems filling this campaign promise to help keep high school students from dropping out.”
HELLO..he can fill the potholes, he can find money to assist the county in fixing a bridge that is dangerous.
WTF happens Libs…if that bridge goes down, you guys gonna blame “W”?
Keep him out of schools, not in the old job description…IS IT?
Where are the responsible adults, teachers and leaders in our community? Please comment if anyone else finds this troubling.
Appalled, answer to your question, there are none, where HE IS CONCERNED.
Isn’t it interesting that Sam is calling in SICK, just like most students who end up dropping out of school because they can not deal with their own truth. Could it be a bad home life Sam?
The bottom line with students is, we as adults need to set an example….Sam lying and asking youth to lie for him is simply not acceptable. Sam, please step down and let others (gay, straight, black white or anything in between) set the RIGHT example.
Exactly. Portland is a great city with many challenges ahead and we, at the very least, need our leaders to be grown-ups. I would even settle for a bad mayor. Adams is an unqualified disaster.

Garrett,
As usual you are not addressing the core issue of this story. Care to comment on Sam’s ineffectiveness as a youth leader in mentoring teenagers to stay in school?
jasun
Garret,
Perhaps you want to ‘get behind’ our youth in the same fashion as our mayor has in the past? Name three big things that haven’t turned to crap when Portlands current mayor got near them. Portlands current mayor would screw up a wet dream.
Portlands mayor is an empty suit. He can’t function in any environment outside of council meetings where he understands and take advantage of meeting protocol. Portlands mayor is not a personable guy. He is an opportunist who is doing a disservice to every demographic he associates with.
What kind of leader is it that can’t/won’t/doesn’t defend themself? Portlands mayor got egg, or whatever it was, all over his and Portlands face. How weird or progressive is it to maintain the status quo policies that have held Portland back since that other narcissistic, predatory pedophile was the mayor of Portland? Portland is one of the cradles of recycling and bottle bills. Portland doesn’t need to be chaperoned by someone that can’t even manage their own personal finance. Portlands current mayor offers nothing that Portland can’t do without and the sooner he is no longer an obstacle to Portlands potential, the sooner Portland can continue becoming everything great about itself.

Jasun: Of course he will not comment, that would show in a “NY minute”, he cannot defend anything SAM is, what he isn’t, is a good mayor.
But do ask Bob/Garrett, to defend this view of what Portland has become, that of course would be the following.
“the Tree-Hugging, Birkenstock-Wearing, Dope Smoking, Red-Headed Sustainable Stepchild of the Pacific Northwest.”
Now some would say, only a mother could love the above…Did anyone ask Mom?
Just wanted to make sure it was clear who the people are behind the recall. Now that they’re crawling out from their holes.
Guys like Republican e-mail spammer Jack Peek, Democrats for Gordon Smith’s Avel Gordly, I hate Sam because my husband was a do nothing mayor who butted heads with Sam all the time’s Karin Hansen, and finally Mr. I’ve been accused of massively defrauding my customers by the Oregon Attorney General’s Ron Tonkin. I bet Wurster didn’t even get close to 20,000 signatures.
Mr. Wurster,
On what basis do you claim that Adams has failed to help keep kids in school? He has been Mayor for 10 months. What data are you using to prove that he has failed?
EASY…he has been a bit “overloaded” with other “issues.”
Strange… I reread my post that you referred to and did not see the word ‘fail’. Nice try though.
I said that Sam Adams is “ineffectiveness as a youth leader in mentoring teenagers to stay in school”.
Aside from him lying to get elected and lacking the publics trust ( I think a lot of Portlanders would be appalled of the idea of Sam entering a high school and being left alone with their teen )… remember when the Parent Leadership Conference Drops Adams As It’s Speaker:
http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/02/10/adams-admission-reaction-parent-leadership-conference-drops-mayor-as-its-speaker/
or the time that Ted Wheeler defended school funding because of Sam’s support of taking county taxes (which pay for schools) to build a MLS stadium:
http://blogs.wweek.com/news/2009/03/10/ted-wheeler-to-testify-against-mls-proposal/
(not to mention the $150,000+ of city money used to pay for lawyers on that failed deal)
Really the list of his ineffectiveness as a leader goes on and on in his short 10 months as mayor.
The question is can Portland afford another 38 months of Sam Adams ineffectiveness?
And how is what you said any different than fail. Good lord, man. If you are going to be that dishonest, how can you have ever claimed to be concerned about Adams’ dishonesty?
Your post does not show that Adams’ actions on this matter have failed. Do you understand why it’s far too early to make the claim you made?
Jingles,
Would you care to focus on the issue of Sam’s ineffectiveness as a youth leader or are you going to continue to try to get people *not* to focus on Sam Adams issues as mayor with your red herring arguments?
I provided proof that he is ineffective… could you please do provide some proof that Sam Adams is an effective leader for teenage youth in the city?
I think that you can not, this why you attack me and ignore questions about Sam Adams being an ineffective leader.
You provided no such thing. Seriously, what makes you think you provided anything but repeated claims?
Jingle Bells, can you defend Sam Adams rather than picking apart his detractors? He’s the admitted liar here. Can you legitimately defend his lies, cover-up and abuse of power without attacking the messengers, as Sam did to eliminate Bob Ball from running? Seems like Sam’s defenders use the same tactics as the lying, vindictive mayor does.
I’m not here to defend Sam Adams. I want him gone. However, it does not help any cause to offer BS criticisms that have no basis in reality. We have plenty of legitimate criticisms to make. Part of the problem with the recall has been that too many of the supporters offer baseless criticisms. This turns off a lot of people who do not like Adams’s actions. The campaign needs to be honest, and the campaigners need to be honest, or there is no point in criticizing Adams for his history of lying.
It appears that Mr. Wurster does not get that. Jack Peek has never gotten that. How about you?
Jack,
There is a reason I didn’t ask you the question. I knew you wouldn’t be able to answer. I let you off the hook, and you still chose to offer more of your usual nothing.
It very simple if you ask me, Sam Adam needs to go. He lied, but he see, just like Senator Craig he did nothing wrong. He thinks because he been in public service, he is the only one who can lead us through are bad economic times, when he is spending tax payer money left and right to try and make himself look good, he is a fraud!!! Ge can’t even make his house payments and is in for closure, and he thinks he can run a city? Sam Adams is the worst type of person he will do what it takes to stay in office! What I see is a very EVIL man, with a big EGO, that thinks he can do and will do anything it take to stay in office, please wake up Portland, this man need to go!!!
Portland look a the big picture!
I’ve said this before and will request it again:
City Council members Fish, Fritz, Leonard and Saltzman-
Please explain to the Citizens of Portland, in great detail, the cause of your continued silence – effectively endorsing and enabling the tragic behavior of our current mayor.
The Citizen’s of Portland voted you into office trusting you possesed characteristics that made you worthy of governing our wonderful City.
Please explain your betrayel of that trust – choosing to conclude our City’s Code of Conduct does not apply to our City’s mayor.
Please explain how you can endorse the resultant decline in City employee morale, the associated decline in workplace productivity, and how you can possibly expect City employees to be held to standards the mayor himself does not possess.
How can this possibly be good for Portland? How can you possibly expect us to trust you again?
Gift certificates from Freddies? I would have thought he might have better spent that kind of money hiring another reporter.. You know like maybe someone from WW who keeps putting up these stories about him.
