Shortly after Lt. Dan Staton was sworn in as interim sheriff this morning, a fourth candidate filed to run for sheriff in the May 2010 primary.

Corrections Sgt. Muhammad Ra’oof, who made an unsuccessful run against outgoing Sheriff Bob Skipper last year to complete former Sheriff Bernie Giusto’s term, filed his paperwork (PDF) today with the county elections office.

Ra’oof becomes the fourth candidate to file for the race, along with Staton, former Undersheriff Tom Slyter and retired Capt. Bruce McCain.

In a separate move, the county board of commissioners this morning set the date for the election to finish former Skipper’s term. Skipper, who stepped down this morning after twice failing a test to earn his state police certification, was set to serve through the end of Giusto’s term in December 2010.

The county board voted unanimously to put that race on the same May 2010 primary ballot. So voters will be asked on the same ballot to choose who should complete Skipper’s term through December 2010 and who should take office for a new four-year term once that term ends in January 2011.

Filing has not yet begun for the race to finish Skipper’s term.

Filing for the race to finish Skipper’s term begins today and finishes March 9, says Eric Sample, spokesman for the county elections office.
