Cesar Chavez

Months of controversy over the renaming of 39th Avenue boil down to this simple fact: New street signs (like the one above) will be going up along the avenue starting next month. If you live on or near the street formerly known as 39th, adjust your directions accordingly for visitors.

  1. 39th Avenue is Between 38th and 40th says:

“If you live on or near the street formerly known as 39th, adjust your directions accordingly for visitors.”

Nope. This effort by our remarkably petulant City Council doesn’t change anything except street signs.

Which is a rather perverse and authoritarian attempt at behavior modification, isn’t it? In the end, it only had the opposite effect–it made people less interested in the subject being “honored”. It was an historic moment when someone stood up and claimed anybody who opposed it was just racist.

How very weird, how very ineffective–and how very racist. Those that honor Chavez will give this effort the response it deserves–scorn.

  2. Paul Soriano says:

Chavez Blvd…has a nice ring to it!

  3. Schemes says:

Cowardly PC cave-in. Perfectly predictable in this city. There is nothing historically latino about 39th. Ridiculous.

  4. thus it is says:

Yeah, I don’t think I will be calling the street anything other than 39th.

  5. tangible says:

Adams has city money for street name and sign changes, but not enough money to fill in potholes. Who makes these decisions?
