Behind a heavy locked door, Oregon’s newest cannabis café, run by Oregon NORML, prepared to begin its first day of service for medical marijuana patients. Perhaps unsurprisingly on the first day, things started slowly, with a press conference that started 30 minutes late.

NORML executive director Madeline Martinez called marijuana “the safest medicine known to mankind” and said she expected up to 300 people until 10pm tonight. Seven people will be checking the doors to make sure all patrons are Oregon NORML and Oregon Medical Marijuana Program cardholders. Café workers also hold cards.

“We’re never going to stop,” Martinez said. She says the Rumpspanker’s space has surrendered its liquor license to avoid problems with the OLCC. Rumpspankers will keep conjuring cookies and scones. But now mostly volcanoes, a vaporization method of marijuana intake, adorn the flat surfaces of the cafe.

Martinez also spoke of “harnessing the black market” and using it to help the economy. Oregon NORML founder Anna Diaz said in the six years the organization has been meeting, there has never been an incident with the police, and that they are “hoping to be respectful” to their neighbors.

Elizabeth, who had two spinal surgeries in the past three years, just received her medical marijuana card and hopes to convene with other marijuana users on how to deal with pain. “They’ll know my name here,” she said, as the scent of fresh weed wafted by.

The rest, to be honest, is a little hazy.

So they’re admitting to illegal activity in “harnessing the black market”, they “hope” to not annoy the neighbors – and they are “conjuring” cookies and scones? What does that mean?
Are they making them and selling them? Are they imagining baked goods? I don’t understand.

To D….pretended ignorance is not becoming to you or anyone else. What do you not understand about folks who are not content with becoming addicted to pain-killers and other drugs finding a medication that is both safe and effective? Your imaginative ‘parsing’ of the article does add a touch of humor where humor can certainly be utilized.

    To Toni & D.
Completely agree with Toni. I’d rather take/eat/smoke a drug that is grown natural, then a drug that is made from the hands of man.

i fully agree with bowlet i myself suffer from chronic back pain from 3 crushed disks and 4 cracked vertebrae unfortunately i became addicted to opiates because they were the only medication that worked until i tried cannabis it not only helped my pain but significantly reduced my withdraw symptoms from years of constant opiate use never again will i touch man made or opiate based pain killers its amazing how the government wants to persecute people for using a plant to cure pain yet at the same time force chronic pain sufferers to become slaves to pharmaceutical companies expensive and highly addictive products this is absolutely unacceptable and more people need to stand up for the decriminalization of marijuana COMPLETELY not just for medical use i believe it would significantly reduce alcohol use and crimes such as DUIs or alcohol related deaths WAKE UP PEOPLE AND STAND UP FOR THIS CAUSE GOD DIDNT PUT THIS PLANT ON EARTH FOR IGNORANT PEOPLE AND POLITICIANS TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF BY PERSECUTING ITS USERS “God said, “I have given you every plant with seeds on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seeds. This will be your food.” i could have sworn this country was based on religious freedom and the innocent until PROVEN GUILTY guarantee but apparently no one is willing to fight or stand up for the BASIS OF OUR COUNTRY any longer this is very sad no wonder why were considered the LAZIEST country in the world
