The Portland Police Association today announced plans to hold a no-confidence vote next week on Police Commissioner Dan Saltzman and Chief Rosie Sizer after the two leaders yesterday disciplined Officer Chris Humphreys.

The union board representing rank-and-file officers today unanimously agreed to put the no-confidence vote to its 900 members, according to a news release (PDF).

“Leadership of the Police Bureau at the hands of Commissioner Dan Saltzman and Chief Sizer has failed Officer Chris Humphreys and our entire membership,” the news release quotes Sgt. Scott Westerman (see photo), the union president, as saying.

“The events of the last few weeks have shown that Dan Saltzman cares more about politics than he does for the lives and families of police officers,” the Westerman quote continues. “Likewise, Chief Sizer’s failure to stand by the officers of this bureau when they have done absolutely nothing wrong and are being used as political pawns is deplorable.”

Humphreys was involved in a Nov. 14 incident on an East Portland MAX platform where Humphreys shot a 12-year-old girl with a beanbag gun. The girl was resisting arrest and tussling with another officer, Aaron Dauchy.

The cops also plan a rally to support Humphreys and collect ballots in the no-confidence vote on Tuesday, according to the news release. The date and time of the rally will be announced Monday.

Rather than listing the PPA office as a contact, the news release gives a phone number for Shannon Berg with Gallatin Public Affairs, a PR firm the union hired earlier this fall. For what it’s worth, the firm’s roster includes former Mayor Vera Katz.

  1. Clem Hurwitz says:

The union does not have a clue. If they go forward with this, they are only going to lose any remaining public support for the rank and file police officer.

  2. run dan run! says:

The dysfunctional bullies are pissed! Run Dan Run!

  3. Forest Gump says:

Hey! You stole my line. I was going to say that the dysfunctional union bullies are out in force. Run Dan run!

  4. DamosAbadon says:

Now this is one union that DESERVES to be broken up!

  5. Anton_Chigurh says:

    I’m quaking in my boots.

Oh dear, what if they strike?

A strike would be the end of the union.

    I hope they do strike.

  6. MarinMarinaro says:

Wasted days and wasted nights. The union is out to destroy itself, or so it appears.

  7. Brian says:

Shhhhhhhhhhhh….If we are very very quiet, they may just implode….

  8. BK says:

No confidence vote for the Portland Police Association.
    Thugs.

  9. lyleleander says:

“Now this is one union that DESERVES to be broken up!”

And the irony of that is that most cops are right-wing republicans who, if they were in any other line of work, would spend half their day screaming about how unions are destroying the country and symbolize the beginnings of fascism and communism.

But they’re cops, as irony has it, so the union serves its purpose to them.

““The events of the last few weeks have shown that Dan Saltzman cares more about politics than he does for the lives and families of police officers,” the Westerman quote continues. “”

Right Fatlock! It’s actually just the opposite. You desrve a city wide vote of no confidence. Saltzman’s trying to do the only thing that’s going to bring respect back to the PPD. Rosie knows Humphries needs to go, as well. She’s trying to salvage what’s left of the PPD’s reputation.

Put the donuts down Westerman, step away from the mic and engage your brain. You and Humph-a-Lump make the entire force look bad. As long as you and Humph-a-lump are there, the PPD is going to be drug down.

  11. Scott Farcas says:

Do we know if they shake kids down on Max for their lunch money?

The PPD Union and Local Hatey Hate (Local 88) need to be disbanded. These organizations create malice and a sense of entitlement in their dysfunctional members. No citizen should have to defend themselves against bullies backed by these two harassment machines.

James it would be interesting for you to do an expose on ALL THE UNION abuses that have gone on in this city and that have been brushed under the carpet and PAID OFF that our citizenry is not aware of. Really bad “stuff”.

“Stuff” our citizens deserve to be made aware of t; deputy hate speech braodcasted on Myspace directed towards protected classes and their co-workers, wives and children, creepy union employees interests in Pedophelia and Necrophelia posted online. With at least one of these unions backing pervert on a freedom of speech basis? And not harassment? Stalking women as just being curious?….list goes on and on.

And our sleazeball and corrupt officials beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeend over for Unions and pay their dysfunctionl bastards, with taxpayer dollars, look the other way when they commit crimes. present cases on the lid of a garabage can to the grand jury. And we wonder why these things keep happening over and over again.

I’ve had enough. Since no one is doing anything about it, I am going to write a book and begin naming names.

  12. DamosAbadon says:

“No confidence vote for the Portland Police Association.
    Thugs.”

Right you are! A “NO CONFIDENCE” vote from me, too.

  13. BB says:

When does the public get to do a confidence vote on our police force?

  14. Austin says:

Agreed, I’d add my name to a no confidence vote on the police union.

  15. Tony Columbo says:

Why are they not bashing Portland’s mayor a strong supporter of Commissioner Dan Saltzman? Why is’nt Sam Adams included in the Police Unions Plans for a No-Confidence Vote. Is it because Gallatin Public Affairs employs Vera Katz?

  16. Jack Bog says:

When does the public get to do a confidence vote on our police force?

    Today: http://tinyurl.com/yfxfpem

  17. Wow says:

17 out of 17 replies are negative. WW says “tussling” with the 12 year old when the officer was actually PUNCHED. Where does it mention that the girl weighs in the 160s? Oh, it doesn’t. WW is ridiculously slanted. Yes, I’m a cop. I’m pro-union for police, plumbers, and welders alike. I know the facts because I was there. If he had tased her, you’d cry foul. If he had pepper sprayed her, you’d cry foul. A 15 yr old shot Deputy Damon Coates in the face with a gun. I don’t care if you’re 12 or 99. You don’t assault police, you don’t resist arrest. If you do, then deal with the circumstance. I’m glad that most Portlanders are not pathetic like you 17. I hope I come to your house when you have or are being assaulted… and I hope that I do nothing that offends you when I try to help you. I WILL help you even though you WON’T appreciate my effort. I don’t have to like you and you don’t have to like me. I will still do my best to do what I have been sworn to do. Feel free to comment. I won’t be replying and I definitely won’t be reading any more of your lame comments. See you at the rally.

    • Austin says:

Do you realize how silly you sound? Dear lord, an officer was punched by a twelve year old school girl! PUNCHED!
You are right though, people would cry foul. Why? Because it’s fucking ridiculous, Officer Wow, for three cops to need to resort to using anything against a twelve year old. I don’t care how fat she is.
If you are one of our magnificent police officers, I’ll make sure to call the elementary school across the street next time I need help.

Imagine if there were three 12 year olds, you guys would probably call in the army!
